DANGEROUS
MATERIAL CODES
Today
more than one million chemicals are carried with sea transport. The
difficulties of knowing so many ,with one by one
different materials , acting accordingly is obvious. As a result of this
difficulty, on 1960 Known
as IMCO International Maritime Consultative Organization , the most important
dangerous chemicals, has been gathered with classifying under short name IMDG
- C (International Maritime Dangerous Goods - Code) . According to
International standards determinating dangerous
material class and if containers carry godds , It must be with stickers. Stickers
dimensions should be at least 10cm x 10cm. According to life and good security
separately one by one. indicating specifications wanted 9 different dangerous material classes are
listed below according to international sticker and code signs.
CLASS 1
EXPLOSIVES
The stows should be done away from
personnel locals and ship boat just under the barn shutters.
The material included to this class :
Dark Gunpowder , Firework, Fog Bomb, Ammunition,
Dynamite vb.

CLASS 2
GASES
CLASS 2.1
FLAMMABLE GAS : Should be stowed away from
every kind of heath sources and personnel
locals.
The materials included to this class:
Acetylene, Ethane, Ethylene, Methane, Hydrogen, Gaslighter
etc.

CLASS 2.2
TOXIC GAS : Should be stowed far from
every kind of heat sources , personnel locals and food stuff.
The materials included to this class :
Ammoniac, Flor, Prüssik Asit,
Klorit, Carbon monokside
vb.

CLASS 2.3
NON-FLAMMABLE COMPRESSED GAS : Should be
preserved in good ventilated , cool places on board or under board. The tubes
filled with these gases are enlarged when they are heated it is very
dangerous because this can cause explosions.
The materials included to this class :
Argon, Helium, Carbon dioxide, Air Gas, Oxygen etc.

CLASS 3
FLAMMABLE LIQUID
Burning liquids, if heated, according to evaporated gas’ burning point are divided
in to 3 groups .
CLASS 3.1
FUEL: Burning point is less then 18O
C. Allways stowed on board.

CLASS 3.2
MAZOT : Burning point between 18OC - 23OC. Should
be stowed on board or under board.
CLASS 3.3
DIESEL : Burning point between 23OC - 61OC . Should
be stowed under board.
CLASS 4
GASES
CLASS 4.1
FLAMMABLE SOLID : Should not be stowed on
board or under board. Should be kept away from living areas.
The materials included to this class:
Aluminium , Sellüloid, Naphthaline,
Red Fosfor, Films, Neft Oil,
Dry Lifts vb.

CLASS 4.2
SPONTENOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE : Should be stowed
in very good ventilated places , stack betweens must be stowed as air
circulation.
The materials included to this class :
Kopra, Fish Flour, Dry Herbal, Barbecue Coal etc.

CLASS 4.3
DANGEROUS WHEN WET : Solids showing burning specialities when contact
with water or when get wet .Should be kept in dry places and should avoid
water contact
The materials included to this class :
Alkalin,, Barium, Karpit,
Ferro Silisyum, Natrium, Magnezyum
vb.

CLASS 5
OXIDIZING SUBSTANCES
CLASS 5.1
OXIDIZING AGENT : The materials in this class , cause the releasing oxygen, they
constitute digestive for blaze. Should not be stowed near flammable materials
according to these specialities.
The materials included to this class :
Nitrate, Artificial Manure, Ammonium Sulphate , Barium Clorate
vb.

CLASS 5.2
ORGANIC PEROXIDE : The materials in this class
can both flammable and explosive Should
be put on board covered , kept dry and cool.
The materials included to this class:
All peroxides are included to this class.

CLASS 6
POISONOUS (TOXIC)
CLASS 6.1
POISONOUS MATERIAL (TOXIC) : Poisonous
materials can enter to people body by respiratory tract and can be killed people. So they must be
stowed a far from food, drinking, living quarters and like tobacco moisture
The materials included to this class :
Arsenik, Anilin, Heavy
Earth, Fenol, Nicotine, Lead , Cyanide, Mercury vb.

CLASS 6.2
INFECTIOUS (BIOLOGICAL)SUBSTANCE : These materials
cause diseases because they contain microbes. They should be stowed away from
food stuff, beverage and living areas. In dangerous situations the nearest
health authorities should be advised.
The materials included to this class:
Bone, Bone Oil, Compressed Meat Wastes , Animal Skins , Blood Powder etc.

CLASS 7
RADIOACTIVE ARTICLES
These articles are transfered in special containers. The containers must be non
damaged. Preferably stowed on board , away from
staff local , food staff , non-bathed films, drugs and chemical materials.

Divided in to 3 groups according to activate degrees.
